Mitchell SD -
World's Only Corn Palace

The Corn Palace is the town's claim to fame. The corn-decorated building in Mitchell SD has a history dating back to 1892. Each year a new theme of decorations is chosen for the Corn Palace, and the building is redecorated. The materials used include native corn, grasses and grains of South Dakota. In addition to the exhibits, the building houses an arena that is used for basketball games, stage shows, trade shows, proms, graduations and other community events.

If your travels take you near Mitchell, then consider stopping to see this one of a kind edifice. Admission is free, donations are welcome. Inside, you can see a video of the story behind the Corn Palace and chronological pictures of the many faces of this SD attraction over the years. There is also a gift shop and snack bar. Don't expect to be overwhelmed by the Corn Palace. It is not mind-boggling, but it is interesting.

Another reason to stop in Mitchell is Cabela's. Browse for fishing, camping, hunting and other outddor gear. The store is located at one end of town with ample RV parking, RV dump station and non-potable water.

From what we can tell, these two venues are the highlights of the town on a normal day. Other attractions include the Enchanted World Doll Museum across the street from the Corn Palace, a Prehistoric Indian Village, Middle Border Museum and the Oscar Howe Art Center.

If you time your visit as we did, you will be able to catch the Corn Stampede Rodeo (in 2005, it was held July 14-17). We had fun at the Rodeo and the associated Parade and Chili Cookoff.

Another major event is the Corn Palace Festival held in late August/early September, celebrating the annual redecoration and new theme.

Mitchell SD is west of Sioux Falls, right off of interstate 90. Cabela's and Walmart are both near the exit.
